Dinner Theatre with a Taste of Dubai and the Sounds of Sinatra

In mid-September, an avant-garde dinner began on an artificial island shaped like a palm tree. Around 6 p.m., guests gathered in a dimly lit rooftop restaurant at Dubai’s Nakheel Mall. Outside, the evening call to prayer echoed off skyscrapers, construction sites, and white villas.

Inside, electronic music played, creating an ambience as waiters served a nearly twenty-course meal for Dh695 (around £$190). It all started with a postmodern panipuri, a crispy cup of pastry with hearts of palm. Theatrical elements and neo-Indian dishes appeared first, which smoothly followed one another. For example, a cinnamon stick supported pieces of baked crab, and mushroom broth from a glass teapot enveloped mushroom noodles. Then, with special ceremony, waiters served fried pineapple, tomato broth and other dishes. Moreover, at one point, the lights suddenly dimmed, and the room was filled with the melody of “Fly Me to the Moon”. As a result, the atmosphere of the dinner became even more magical.

As guests finished the last dessert – white chocolate ice cream with Emirati honey – Frank Sinatra’s voice faded away, ending the evening in an atmosphere of sophistication and tranquility.
